Embellished Abayas: Why the Detail Moved to the Cuff

Every year around this time, my calendar fills up. Engagements, dinners, and a wedding most weekends once the weather cools. And every year I hit the same problem. I want an embellished abaya that feels like an occasion, but I don't want sparkle from collar to hem. This month's New In solved it for me. The embellishment has moved to the cuff. Pearls, beads, tulle and fringe, all sitting right at the wrist on otherwise plain black crepe. It's the most wearable way I've found to dress up for event season.

Why an Embellished Abaya Works Better at the Cuff

The wrist is where people actually look. You hand someone a coffee, you hold a plate at the buffet, you hug the bride. Your hands are moving all evening, so a detail placed there gets seen without you doing anything. Keep the body plain and the cut stays clean. You also get more wear out of it. A plain black front with a pearl cuff works at a midweek dinner as well as a Saturday wedding.

Pearl Cuffs for the Big Nights

If you want one piece for the whole season, I'd start with The Huriya Black Pearl Mesh Cuff Abaya. It's coat-style, with a notch lapel and a single button, and the sleeves split open to show mesh insets dotted with pearls. Inverted box pleats flare out from the waist, so it moves when you walk into a room.

The Mayasa Black Pearl Fringe Cuff Abaya is softer. It's open at the front, with a satin shawl lapel and pearl fringe swinging at each cuff. The tassel ties are finished with pearl beads too. I'd wear this one over a fitted black inner dress so the satin lapel and the pearls are the only things catching the light.

Beads and Tulle for Something Lighter

The Renad Beaded Slit Cuff Abaya has a shawl collar and wide flared sleeves that split at the cuff, with looped beads trimming the opening. The shoulders are dropped and unpadded, so it feels relaxed. This is my pick for a henna night or a family dinner where a full pearl moment would be too much.

The Ruwaida Embellished Tulle Cuff Abaya takes a different route. The neckline is round and the front placket is concealed, so the body is as quiet as it gets. Then sheer tulle extends past each wrist, scattered with sequin and crystal dragonflies. It's playful without being loud, and it's the one I'd choose for an evening engagement.

A Soft Color Pop at the Wrist

Not every occasion detail has to shine. The Hadiya Ruffled Bow Cuff Abaya is long and coat-style with a shawl collar. Its cuffs are pleated ruffles in a contrast pink, tied with ribbon bows. Against black crepe, that flash of pink reads festive in a way beads don't. I'd keep jewelry minimal and let the bows carry the look. For even more playful cuffs in daylight, I've also styled whimsical abayas with embroidered cuffs.

How I Style Embellished Cuffs

I follow three rules. First, skip the bracelet. The cuff is already your jewelry, and a bangle on top will catch on the beads. Second, pick one more focal point at most: earrings or a bag, not both. Third, match the sleeve to the plan. Wide fringed cuffs are lovely at a seated dinner but less practical at a buffet. I save the Mayasa for nights with table service and reach for the Huriya when I'll be on my feet.

Event season runs long here, and one embellished abaya can carry you through most of it if the detail sits in the right place. If you'd rather build from a plain base, the Black Abayas Collection has the simpler pieces I'd wear on the nights in between.
