Silk Abaya Guide: How I Wear It and Keep It Looking New

Ivory silk fabric with soft folds and a subtle sheen for silk abayas

A silk abaya is the piece I reach for when I want to look put together with zero effort. The fabric does the work: it catches the light, falls straight, and moves when I do. Searches for silk abayas have been climbing in the UAE and Saudi Arabia this autumn, and the cooler evenings are the best time to wear one. Here's how I tell silk from satin, how I wear it from morning to dinner, and how I keep it looking new.

Silk abaya or satin abaya: what's the difference?

People use the two words as if they mean the same thing. They don't. Silk is a fiber. Satin is a weave, the way threads are put together to make a smooth, shiny face. A satin can be woven from silk, or from other fibers.

In practice, here's what I notice. Silk feels light and soft against the skin and has a gentle, low sheen. Satin has a stronger shine and often a heavier, more fluid drape. Both are worth owning. I wear silk when I want something soft and easy, and satin when I want the abaya to look dressier.

The silk pieces I'd start with

For a first silk abaya, I like a print. It hides small creases and makes the fabric feel playful rather than formal. The Abeer Ivory Polka Dot Silk Abaya is pure silk in ivory with a black dot, cut open at the front with a relaxed drape. I wear it over a black inner dress so the dots stand out.

If you'd rather start from black, The Lujain Black Multi Floral Silk Abaya is cut in mang silk with a bright floral print on a black base and wide sleeves. It's the one I'd wear to an evening gathering.

Silk also works as a set. The Haneen Ivory Polka Dot Silk Co-ord Set pairs a wrap top with wide-leg trousers in the same print as the Abeer, so I can wear the set under the abaya for a full matching look, or split them up.

When satin or jacquard makes more sense

For dinners and weddings, I sometimes want more shine than silk gives. The Dana Deep Mocha Satin Abaya is Japanese satin in a warm mocha, open at the front, and it reads dressier than its plain cut suggests.

Jacquard is the other option I'm seeing more of right now. The pattern is woven into the fabric, not printed on top, so you get texture that changes as the light hits it. The Noura Dusty Blue Satin Jacquard Abaya has a tonal floral jacquard on a satin mix, with a soft V-neck and a relaxed straight cut.

How I wear a silk abaya day to night

  • Daytime: flat sandals, a simple inner dress and a small crossbody. Let the fabric be the only shiny thing.
  • Evening: swap to a heel and add one piece of gold jewelry at the wrist or ear.
  • Layering: silk is thin, so on cooler nights I put a fine knit inner dress underneath rather than a heavy layer on top.

How I care for silk so it lasts

Silk asks for a little attention, not a lot. I always check the label first, then follow a few rules:

  • Hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent, or dry clean if the label says so.
  • Never wring it. Press the water out in a towel and hang it to dry in the shade.
  • Iron on a low setting with a cloth between the iron and the fabric, or steam it.
  • Keep perfume off the fabric. Spray it on your skin and let it dry before you dress.
